Culturally, many of us in heterosexual relationships haven’t let go of traditional practices. The opening of doors, letting women go first, and men walking on the outside of the sidewalk are all old-school practices in courtship. It actually becomes common practice for Latina women to come together seeking group love and support.

And it’s the kind of step forward that we need, since current projections show that – if trends to close the Latina wage gap continue – they’ll have to wait 232 years for equal pay. White women are projected to wait 40 more years, and Black women are projected to wait another 108. Something that could help is a minimum wage increase, which would benefit a large amount of Latina workers. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that if the minimum wage were increased to $12 per hour by 2020 – a proposal introduced in Congress that lawmakers ultimately didn’t take up – then more than 35 million workers would receive a raise.

The media has a powerful influence and if Latina women keep being represented the way they are, they will start adopting and becoming what the media wants them to be. The media has hypersexualized the Spanish words for mom and dad. White men expect Latina women to call them “papi” in a sexual context, or use the term “mami” as a sexual compliment, but Latinx use these terms to refer to their parents. That media portrayal transfers into the real world where Latinas feel the obligation to dress explicitly or are expected to do so by white men in order to be accepted in society, which can harm the way Latinas view themselves. But some Latino women aren’t doing the rest of us any favors, with some popular stars contributing to exoticism.

  • These disparities are leaving a growing portion of our population more vulnerable to poverty and its implications.
  • Hispanic workers are one of the fastest-growing populations in the labor force, yet many are still held back by structural disparities and discrimination that result in low wages and other negative labor market outcomes.
  • In addition to finding that unexplained wage gap for Hispanic women is greater than the aggregation of the absolute ethnic and gender effects, we also identify particular groups of Hispanic women at an even greater disadvantage.

Of course, I was happy that David returned, but I knew that if it ever happened again, I could take care of myself and the kids would help. I wanted to model to my children that despite trials, whether they come from society or ourselves, we must remember when we had less, and those who have less, and what we must do to help each other. She found a clerical position at a public immunization clinic, where she encountered Latina women and their children, many of whom were gaining access to health care for the first time. More recently, Latinx has emerged as an alternative to Hispanic and Latino. Online searches for the term among the general U.S. population appeared online in the early 2000s. But the first substantial rise in searches appeared in June 2016 following a shooting at Pulse nightclub, an LGBTQ dance club in Orlando, Florida, that was hosting its Latin Night on the date of the attack.

Use is among the highest for Hispanic women ages 18 to 29 – 14% say they use it, a considerably higher share than the 1% of Hispanic men in the same age group who say they use it.
